You may have heard of Fiber Optic Cable before. It’s what helps provide your home or business with an internet connection, but how exactly does it work?

To put it simply, fiber harnesses the power of light. That might sound fantastical, but it’s the truth. Fiber optic wire is extremely thin, as thin as one of the hairs on your head. It is through this wire that light pulses are inlaid. These light pulses receive and transmit signals through the wire, which provides you with your internet services.

This is very different from copper wire, which instead is much larger and receives electrical signals instead of light ones. But while copper is the more traditional and widely used, fiber optic has improved on it in many ways. For one thing, fiber optic can’t receive electromagnetic inference, since there is no reliance on electricity. In addition, the signal received by fiber optic won’t degrade as quickly as it would in copper. These reasons, among many others, is why so many ISPs, including Empire, are making the switch to fiber optic.
